A recent deployment in Regina, Saskatchewan offers a clear view into how bifacial modules perform when paired with dual-axis tracking under some of the most demanding solar conditions. Over a four-month winter period, Mechatron’s M18KD trackers consistently delivered energy output above nominal system capacity, with bifacial gains reaching up to 24%. Despite low sun angles, snow-covered terrain, and shortened daylight hours, the system maintained double-digit gains for much of the daily production window—demonstrating that even in constrained environments, system design can unlock meaningful performance advantages.

At the core of this performance is the interaction between environmental conditions and system architecture. Snow-covered ground creates high reflectivity, while the elevated structure of the tracker enhances the capture of diffused and reflected irradiance. Combined with precise dual-axis movement, the system is able to follow both azimuth and zenith angles throughout the day, increasing exposure to usable light. The result is not a short-lived peak, but sustained energy gains that begin in the late morning and extend through peak production hours.

Beyond the winter test itself, the installation points to a broader shift in how solar systems can be designed for performance rather than compromise. With higher energy density, minimal land footprint, and strong projected returns, dual-axis tracking paired with bifacial technology presents a compelling solution for regions where traditional systems underperform. What is often considered a limitation—climate, latitude, or terrain—can instead become a source of additional yield when the system is engineered to respond to it.
